Tour the Market Yard in Coleraine this Saturday
The yard, with its impressive gate lodge, imposing basalt walls and sandstone gateways, is currently undergoing a radical change and Causeway Museum staff will be onsite to guide visitors through the restoration project.
The yard was the first key element in the development of Victorian Coleraine. Constructed in 1829, it hosted a busy livestock market.

Hide AdRemoving it away from the Diamond which signalled a new era of civic pride. The market continued to be a vital commercial hub for the area for the next 150 years.
The area is currently undergoing conservations works to restore the walls and buildings, transforming it into a safe, shared space for the community. The works have been funded by NIEA Listed Buildings Grant Scheme and Landfill Communities Fund.
People are invited along this Saturday for a guided tour and to hear stories from the yard’s rich and varied history. Visitors can also talk to Causeway Museum Service staff and meet the skilled artisans currently working on the renovation project.
John McCollum and Mark Patterson of Heritage Traditional Building Porducts, who are currently working on the yard walls, will be on-hand to talk about their ongoing work.
