Kearney off to a flying start at North of Ireland
Castlerock golfer, Aaron Kearney, leads the way after a fine 65 at The Valley course just one stroke outside the course record he holds jointly with former winner, Wayne Telford.
Kearney (27) was two over after six holes but covered the last 11 in an amazing seven-under-par.

The birdie hat-trick was complete at the long 10th, where he reached the green in two.
He rolled home a 15-footer at 12 and hit the surface again in two at the par five 13th. Another birdie putt disappeared on 16 and he polished off his round with an eight iron to eight feet for a two at 18.
“Towards the end of last year I took an inch off my putter and put on two weights,” added Kearney who reached the last 16 in the British Amateur Championship, a few weeks ago.

“Last year, I missed the cut here but, hopefully, that won’t happen this time.”
Biting at his heels, however, are a number of players on 66, including Tiarnan McLarnon and Cormac Sharvin.
McLarnon did his work around the turn as he covered holes nine to 13 in five-under-par.

A 93-yard approach to the ninth green settled 10 feet from the flag and he holed for birdie three.
He backed that up with a four at the long 10th where he hammered a three wood from 250-yards, again to 10 feet from the pin but, this time, he took two putts to get down, narrowly missing an eagle.
He did, however, pick up an eagle on the 13th green after a drive and eight iron to 20 feet from where he rolled home the putt and he backed that up with a eight foot birdie at the next hole.

Irish Close champion Cormac Sharvin, an Ardglass plus-three handicapper, was regulation for the first 12 holes but then went eagle-birdie and finished with birdie two, covering the final six holes in four-under-par.
Also on 66 was local John Turner who was out in one-under-34 and then went birdie-birdie-par-eagle-par-birdie to be seven-under but finished bogey-bogey.
Alan Grant had seven birdies and an eagle sprinkled on his card but posted only a 68.
